6/23/17 New Mexico
We decided to wait out the heat wave for the day while we were tucked in the cooler forest. Tomorrow it is supposed to be much cooler. So we woke up and did a little 2.5 mile hike through the woods of Lincoln national forest.
We then went into Cloudcroft, which is a cute little town tucked in the national forest. We wanted to go to Mad Jack's BBQ because it had really good reviews but got there and the line was wrapped way out around the door. So we decided to wait out the line and shopped around town a little. We went back and had timed it perfect, the line was gone.
It was all well worth it! You order by lb, and go through an assembly line where they cut it up and package it for you. It was delicious.
We then decided to head towards tomorrow's destination, Carlsbad canyons, and find a place to camp near there. Kyle saw a lake as when we were near by and decided to check it out. Turns out they have hook up sites for $14. Can't beat that!
We grabbed a spot and were ready to jump in the lake. Just our luck, by the time we finally found access to the lake (~1-2 miles later of walking around through cacti and dodging jackrabbits) it had cooled down, the sun was gone, and a storm was coming in. But Maya still enjoyed it.
We don't appreciate our neighbors Mexican music that is currently blaring but the site was cheap and hookups means we can have AC without running the generators all night, a necessity out here in the desert.
Too bad you are not in a tent, you could enjoy the Mexican music so much more.
