5/25/17 Wisconsin, Minnesota, N Dakota, S Dakota
Last night we upgraded from a pilot truck stop and stayed at King Lake State Forest Campground in the upper peninsula. It was a 6 mile dirt road back into a little lake we camped right beside. The land on both sides of the 6 mile drive back in is privately owned by someone I would like to be friends with.
We drove along the very northern border of Wisconsin along Lake Superior. The lake is so massive that it seemed no matter how long we kept driving we were still beside it.
We blew through Wisconsin, didn't get any cheese. My sliced cheese from Giant will have to do.
Minnesota was basically a never ending Lancaster county plus a million mini lakes. The lakes were cool but we drove a long way to drive through Lancaster county so I'm ready for some mountains.
Ate dinner by Battle lake, MN. A windy, chilly, cloudy past two days but the rain held off for us. We Actually slept with the heat on last night.
Minnesota, North and South Dakota all look pretty similar so far, mostly just massive farmlands. I'm curious where they go for grocery shopping as you can go for hours before hitting towns, and even the towns have mostly gas stations and mini Marts.
There is definitely a learning curve when you initially start camping with a camper. I'm grateful for my husband who is handy and able to rig things up when important things like the generator isn't starting properly. We had warm showers and hot food today though so I would say we are doing ok.
Took the long route to Mt Rushmore and headed through North Dakota as neither of us have been there before (I think). We plan to camp by Lake Oahe in central SD. Hoping to do Badlands, Custer, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy horse over the next day or two. We will see how far we get tonight and how the timing all works out, the beauty of not having an itinerary. We passed through two time zones today so that has helped. We have been amazed at how late the sun stays up. It's 815 currently and the sun is still high.
Cell phones of course don't capture the vastness and beauty. You can see for miles here.
You guys are really covering some ground! Will be seeing the mountains soon! 🙂 That campground sounds awesome! Reminds me of the one we stayed at in Maine except with a beautiful lake! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing! Except it was state park so we didn't have a mom and pops to make us muffins
DeleteThat's a shame - they were good muffins 😄
DeleteYou have been to Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Crazy Horse and Custer. Just watch where you step at the last site :) Hope you love them all! I must become better acquainted w/ Lake Superior. Love the pics and narrations!
ReplyDeleteI do remember those. I convinced Kyle it's a must see. Couldn't remember if I've ever been to North Dakota though.
